September Meeting & More

We’re Back! (Almost)

The September meeting of the Pinal Geology and Mineral Society will be at the museum on September 20, 2023 (always the 3rd Wednesday). All are welcome, but you can join today.

Topic: Geology of Meteor Crater, Arizona.

Dr. Grant will give an overview of the geology of Meteor Crater, along with a short appreciation of Dr Carleton Moore, a long-time supporter of the museum and society. Dr. Moore put together and donated our exhibit on the crater (pictured above).

Website Update Continues

There’s even more new stuff continuing to be added to the website.

Bob says the search function is working well, and you can find all sorts of things!

Also, there’s a working glossary function. Whenever you find a word with a dotted line under it, like silver, uranium, or mineral, you can hover your cursor over it, and more information will pop up. Some of those entries have lots more info, and if you tap on them, you should be taken to the whole entry. Use your back button to get back to the original. There are over 1500 terms in there now, including all the minerals of Pinal County (the info on those will be expanding as we can). You can follow the link above to see the whole list of glossary terms if you want.

And the Mineral Identification pages are up and running. They’re not a field guide, but how to identify minerals.

Next up is to add a bunch of pictures we have squirreled away. We want the site pretty as well as informative.

Name: Named in honor of Carleton Bryant Moore (September 1, 1932, in New York City – February 10, 2023, in Tempe, Arizona), professor at Arizona State University and founding director of the Center for Meteorite Studies, Tempe, Arizona, USA.

Type Locality: Norton County meteorite, Norton County, Kansas.

First nickel silicide mineral, was reported as “a new member of silicide minerals”. A low-temperature product, via solid-state diffusion from kamacite in its surroundings, and epitaxial growth on tetrataenite.
